Description
The Controller Area Network (CAN) is an automotive standard network that utilizes a 2 wire bus to transmit and receive data. It is more common in modern cars that we can find CAN bus system for information exchange. CAN bus system uses frames to transmit the Application data. Each node on the network has the capability to transmit 0 to 8 bytes of data in a message frame. A message frame consists of a message header, followed by 0 to 8 data bytes, and then a checksum. The message header contains a unique identifier that determines the message priority also message ids are unique in the bus system. Any node on the network can transmit data if the bus is free. If multiple nodes attempt to transmit at the same time, an arbitration scheme is used to determine which node will control the bus. Arbitration uses wired AND operation to determine the winner. The message with the highest priority, as defined in its header, will win the arbitration and its message will be transmitted. The losing message will retry to send its message as soon as it detects a bus free state. Course aims to cover complete CAN bus system standard with clear explanation

Description
To make our buildings sustianable, it is pertinent that we use minimum amount of mechanical energy to achieve thermal comfort. This is especially challenging in hot climate where high temperature is prevalent most of the year making it inevitable to use mechanical energy for comfort. High humidity can make the situation even more dificult.
Designing buildings that are climate responsive and use as less energy as possible to provide comfort is the way forward. This is is the sustainable approach. Passive solar design principles avoid unwanted heat gain in the building preventing overheating and hence reducing the need for cooling. These principles and strategies are an inherent aspect of the architecture and have been covered in the following courses.

The next step in the process is to provide cooling with passive techniques that do not use any energy. After having exhausted all the available and applicable strategies, the remaining demand can be met by mechanical space conditioning systems. This approach sharply reduces the cooling demand the associated energy use over the lifetime of the building. This cannot be achieved without climate responsive approach.

This is the sixth course in the series that will cover many passive cooling techniques as applicable to buildings in hot climate. Most of these techniques rely on natural heat sinks to dissipate the excess heat gained by a building. This course also enumerates many interesting projects that showcase successful adoption of passive cooling techniques.

The course is structured in 5 modules with highly visual and engaging content. At the end of the course, you will have clarity on different techniques and their application.

Description
Building consume energy all through its lifecycle - right from construction, operation and demolition during end-of-life. There is substantial evidence that buildings that are designed in consideration to the climate and local context tend to consume less energy compared to conventional buildings. Climate responsive design is really the way forward to reduce the energy demand in a sustainable way. This approach will eventually reduce the use of fossil fuels and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
Passive design principles are inherent to climate responsive design. It includes using appropriate form, orientation, materials, daylight and natural breeze as per the climate, so the cooling demand is sharply reduced. In such buildings, the size of the mechanical cooling system is considerably smaller resulting in low energy consumption. A building can use the most efficient space conditioning system, but if its size is not reduced in the first place, then the environmental benefit it provides is limited. This biggest benefit of a solar passive building is the reduced dependency on mechanical systems.

The first step in passive solar design process is to determine solar access for a building and site. This will help designers determine strategies to control daylight and heat gain. Shading mask diagrams are very resourceful tools to determine solar access. This course will equip you to read and create shading masks so that you can use them in your design process.A shading mask is a representation of the sky as viewed from a reference point, indicating the portion of sky that is visible and obstructed. Access to sky means access to daylight. When combined with a sunpath diagram, solar access can be determined. This makes the shading mask diagram a nifty tool for designing passive solar buildings. Additional data such as solar insolation, relative humidity etc can further be overlapped on the sunpath diagram making this a very interesting design tool. This course will ensure you have a thorough understanding of the concept of shading mask and equip you to read the diagram.*Further, the course includes a tutorial that shows how you can create a simple DIY shading mask kit inorder to create diagrams on your own. Software that can be used to create shading mask is also shared. A separate module on the application of shading mask as design tool walks you through some of ways this tool can be used. The fundamental of green building design is to respond to climate and sun. A good handle over the psychrometric chart and the sun path diagram is essential to design green buildings. Psychrometric charts are commonly used by mechanical engineers for designing air conditioning systems. But it has great potential to be used as a building design tool beyond the engineering concepts. Climate variables are better understood if there is clarity on the core concepts of psychrometry.
This course will show how pyschrometric charts can be used by NON-engineering professionals as a tool to derive passive design strategies. This is a primer on understanding climate and its application in building design.
The chart used in the course is in the metric system (SI units). Even if you are familiar only with the IP system of units, you will still be able to follow through all the concepts in the course.
The course is organized in two section with a total of 7 lectures and 1 hour of video content. At the end of the first section, you will be confident is using the psychrometric chart. By the end of the second section, you will understand how to correlate its application to derive passive design strategies.
This is very hands-on and interactive course. There are several examples and exercises scattered throughout the course that will ensure you understand the concepts.
